By Kwame Holman

Samuel Alito was confirmed by the United States Senate on January 31, 2006, by a vote of 58-42. Alito, a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, was nominated by President George W. Bush to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Sandra Day O'Connor.

Alito was sworn in as the 110th justice of the Supreme Court on Tuesday, hours after he was confirmed by the Senate. In a sharply divided vote, the Senate voted 58-42 to confirm Alito. Alito took the oath of office in a private ceremony at the Supreme Court.
